Growing Cotton in Australia.
Cotton is currently being grown in Queensland and New South Wales which are the wetter states of australia. Australia is a drought-prone country and cotton saps up a lot of water should we be growing cotton in Australia?
Cotton must be grown in australia because it creates jobs. A study in 2011 showed that in southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales cotton created 8000 jobs for manufacturers and with 800 people on the farms. if we stopped growing cotton in Australia it would make 8800 people jobless.
Moreover, cotton must be grown in australia because it helps the economy. In an average year Australia makes enough clothes to clothe 500million people. Australia also only keeps 6% of its cotton with 75% of it going to China. if this didn't happen it would cost Australia alot of money.
However, there are lots of reasons cotton Shouldn't be grown in Australia.
Cotton shouldn't be grown in Australia because Australia is prone to droughts. The most known drought, the millennium drought, started in 1995 and continued until 2009, however it wasn't until 2012 that the final effects of the drought went to rest. By then the Australian government had spent $4.5 billion dollars in drought assistance. The major droughts since settlement in the 1700's were the mid 1860's, 1877, 1888, 1895-1903, 1911-16, 1918-20, 1926-30, 1934-44, 1944-54, 1958-68, 1972-81. That's on average a drought happening every 6 years and 1 month, and that is with them lasting 6 months and 4 months.
In my opinion cotton should be grown in Australia because of the following:
We would save money, as a country against the world we are a large country. And whose to say we can't put it to good use? I get cotton wouldn't be the best suited for Australia, however it is a start. If we had to import all our cotton from other countries like America our budget would be worse than this years (2014). We should also grow cotton in Australia because it makes us slightly more independent. Australia wouldn't have to rely on other countries for their cotton supply, and if a war broke out and we were on different sides... "oh no! no more clothes!" (proberbly a celebration for the nudists).
